Gaskell Guitars offers guitars and basses that ordinarily aren’t available by other manufacturers including shapes and styles that are not the usual.
Considering all off-the-shelf guitar hard cases are made for right handed guitars, finding compatible cases for lefties can sometimes be very difficult. No case manufacturers make left handed cases specifically. And you probably don’t want to be seen carrying your non-Fender left handed Superstrat in a “Fender” or “Ibanez” case, right?
Gig bags are often interchangeable or at least adaptable for left handed guitars and here are a selection of guitar bags, soft cases, and hard cases that are suitable for left handed guitars and basses.
LEFT HANDED EXPLORER GUITARS
There are not too many choices for hard cases for left handed Explorer shaped guitars. They do not fit in standard cases due to their bigger size and sweep-back headstock angle. Right handed Explorer guitars cases (Gibson, Epiphone, Tokai, Hamer, Dean, etc) will not fit left handed Explorer guitars. The ones we recommend are:
CNB OVERSIZED ELECTRIC GUITAR HARD CASE. This is a generic open-cavity hard shell case easily available here in Australia. This case is made specifically to house Explorer, Firebird, Flying V and other extreme shape guitars. The good thing about it is that the headstock area has the proper depth for guitars with sweep-back headstocks (such as Explorers and Firebirds.) It is made in China and retails for AU$ 215.00 and is an excellent case.
There are no soft cases made for left handed Explorer guitars.
There are several padded gig bags on the market which are suitable for left handed Explorer guitars. One need not be concerned about flights, bus or train journeys and the costs to transport your instrument in a good gig bag as gig bags offer just as much protection as a hard shell case and are significantly cheaper to transport.
RITTER RGP5-EX This is a high-quality gig bag for right handed Explorer guitars but is equally suited for left handed Explorers. Padding is a total of 28mm. Ritter is from Switzerland and until 2015 their products were only available to us through European retailers, at full retail price. However since July 2015 there is an Australian distributor, Music Connection in Adelaide. We are now able to option your guitar with these excellent bags for half the price they were costing us to buy in from Europe before. Retailing at AU$ 89.00 these Explorer bags are not only great value but offer excellent protection and also dramatically bring down the costs to ship a guitar from Australia to the rest of the world.
GB DELUXE. This heavy-duty nylon padded gig bag offers excellent protection for your Explorer guitar. It is made for right handed Explorers but is suited equally well for left handed Explorers. This bag is made in India and is very well made. For normal gigging I would recommend this bag for your left handed Explorer. Unfortunately this product has been discontinued by Australian wholesalers so we now have to buy this bag at full retail price from the USA. It can be bought through Alto Music for US$ 49.99 + postage. There is also a “Premium” version which can be bought from Amazon USA for US$ 77.95 + postage. Postage from USA to Australia is US$ 49.50 (about AU$ 70.00.) This bag ends up being AU$ 140.00 for the Deluxe and AU$ 170.00 for the Premium. We make no profit on these products. UPDATE DECEMBER 2016. Alto Music is now selling the Deluxe bag under the brand “Buhne Industries” and the “GB” brand is now unavailable. They are both the same product and the prices are the same.
THOMANN. This is the same bag as the GB DELUXE Explorer bag but sold by German music chain store THOMANN under their own brand. They are pretty much identical. Thomann has no presence in Australia and we can only buy this bag at full retail from Thomann in Europe, which by the time exchange rate and shipping is added it works out to be about AU$ 110.00. If you live in Australia and bought one from Thomann yourself you will be paying the same price as us. We make no profit on Thomann products.
WORLD TOUR. This is an American brand that made a wide range of musical instrument bags but appears to have gone out of business recently. Their Explorer bag is very similar to the GB and THOMANN bags. N.O.S products are still available through US online store American Musical Supply. AMS is retailing it for US$ 29.95 + postage. Postage from USA to Australia is US $49.50. All up it works out to be approximately AU$ 110.00 per bag. We sell this bag for what it costs us. We make no profit on this product.
LEFT HANDED EXPLORER BASS
There are no hard cases made to fit Explorer Bass guitars.
There are no soft cases made to fit Explorer Bass guitars.
Unfortunately there are not many options for Explorer bass gig bags. We know of two.
GB PREMIUM. This heavy duty nylon gig bag will fit a left handed Explorer Bass but the fit is quite loose and a little long. With extra stuffing at the headstock the bag is quite safe for travelling by plane, train or bus. We are not able to get this bag from Australian wholesalers and it is only available via Amazon USA. It retails for US$ 77.95 + shipping. Shipping from USA to Australia is US$ 49.50 (about AU$ 70.00.) All up approximately AU$ 170.00. There is a GB “Deluxe” version too which retails for US$ 65.95 + shipping. I am not sure what is different between them. We make no profit on this proWe sell this bag for what it costs us. We make no profit on this product.
THOMANN. This heavy duty nylon gig bag is available through the German chain store THOMANN which unfortunately has no presence in Australia. We have to buy in this bag at full retail price. The bag is extremely well-made and offers excellent protection for your left or right handed Explorer bass. Even with the very expensive shipping costs the bag still ends up at only AU$ 100.00 For us, that’s cheap. An absolute bargain! We sell this bag for what it costs us. We make no profit on this product.
LEFT HANDED FIREBIRD GUITARS
Left handed Firebird guitar cases are not easy to come by. Definitely right handed Firebird cases will not fit left handed Firebird guitars unless the RH case was for a non-reverse body Firebird? I have never seen one, so I don’t really know if that is true. The only cases that will fit left handed Firebirds are oversized open-cavity case, the types that are specifically designed for large or extreme shaped guitars like Explorers, Firebirds, Flying Vs, Mockingbirds, etc.
CNB OVERSIZED ELECTRIC GUITAR CASE. This is a generic open-cavity hard shell case easily available here in Australia. This case is made specifically to house Explorer, Firebird, Flying V and other extreme shape guitars. The good thing about it is that is has adequate depth where the headstock fits for guitars with sweep-back headstocks (such as Explorers and Firebirds.) It is made in China and retails for AU$ 215.00.
There are no soft cases made to fit left handed Firebird guitars. Right handed soft cases will not fit left handed guitars.
Unfortunately there is only one brand of gig bag I am aware of specifically for Firebird guitars.
GB DELUXE Firebird gig bag. This bag is made in India and has 20mm padding. It is made of good quality, tough cordura nylon. It’s not the best case for rugged travel conditions but going from gig to gig, the bag is ideal. This bag is not available in Australia but can be obtained from Amazon or eBay USA. It retails for $US 64.95. Shipping from USA to Australia is US$ 49.50 (about AU$ 70.00.) All up you are looking at about AU$ 160.00 for this bag. We sell this bag for what it costs us. We make no profit on this product.
LEFT HANDED LES PAUL & PRS STYLE
Due to the non-symmetrical shape of Les Pauls and most PRS guitars, most shaped (fitted) hard cases meant for these guitars will not fit left handed versions. The best solution for left handed LP and PRS style guitars is a generic open-cavity guitar case.
Gator Titan Series GWP-LP ATA Impact & Waterproof Guitar Case. The GWP-LP case by Gator is a heavy duty flight case constructed from impact proof lightweight NK-7™ resin with Power Claw latches. This is one of the few fitted hard cases that will fit both right handed and left handed Les Paul and PRS style guitars. The case’s orientation actually favours left handed guitars over right handed guitars, with the guitar body being on the left side and the headstock being on the right side of the case. The GWP-LP retails in Australia for AU$ 455.00.
Gator GC-ELECTRIC-A. This is an open cavity hard shell case made from ABS plastic with foam interior with plush lining and chrome plated lockable latches to fit Les Paul style guitars. Like all generic guitar cases on the market it is made for right handed guitars but because it is an open cavity case it will fit your left handed LP style guitar too. For the Gaskell HYBRID we recommend the next size up in this range, the Gator GC-ELEC-XL. The XL case retails in Australia for AU$ 299.00.
SKB 1SKB-56. This case is a hard ABS plastic fitted case that will take Les Paul and PRS style guitars. It is made for right handed guitars specifically but will fit left handed guitars as well. It is one of the few good quality hard cases that fit both. It retails for AU$ 199.00.
There are many soft cases for Les Paul guitars. All are made for right handed guitars specifically. So long as the padding is equal for top and bottom of the case they will also suit left handed guitars as well.
SKB 1SKB-SCFS6. This is an excellent soft case for Les Paul and PRS style guitars and is the one we recommend for our Custom Gaskell Hybrid and Rockit models if a soft case is preferred. It is extremely well made and the padding is just as good as a hard case. Also extremely well priced, this case is highly recommended.
There are lots of gig bags by many brands that are suitable for left handed LP or PRS style guitars.
REUNION BLUES RB CONTINENTAL. Reunion Blues, located in California, USA has been making instrument bags since 1976. Their RB Continental gig bag is possibly the most protective guitar case on the market. The product information on their website says:
“The RB Continental’s water-resistant ballistic Quadraweave exterior surrounds a lightweight Flexoskeleton protection system of 1″ thick high-density foam and EVA impact panels that offers enough protection to survive a 40-foot drop without so much as a nick or scratch.”
We are quite familiar with this bag and highly recommend it if you want the ultimate in protection. This case retails in Australia for AU$ 350.00XTREME BAGS AUSTRALIA TB315C. This is a heavy duty guitar bag by Xtreme Bags Australia. It is extremely well made and offers superior padding and protection. Unlike a lot of generic gig bags the fit of this bag is excellent for an LP or PRS shape and the bag can be hand-carried or slung like a back pack. For under $100 these are excellently priced for the superior level of protection they offer. We recommend this bag as a good run-around bag for the working musician. These bags are a stock item.
LEFT HANDED SUPERSTRAT GUITARS
There are many brands that make cases for Strat shapes but not all are suitable for left handed guitars too. The shape of the Gaskell Eagle is unique and not like other Superstrats so it does matter what case you option for your Eagle build.
G&G DELUXE TWEED CENTER POCKET. G&G Quality Case Co. is located in the USA and makes OEM hard cases for Fender, Suhr, Tom Anderson, Jackson, Schecter and others. Their unbranded centre pocket hard case will also fit left handed Superstrats such as the Gaskell Eagle. Their side pocket case will not. G&G cases are lavish and flashy but are also very high quality products for high quality guitars. If you really want one of these they have to be ordered from G&G direct and with shipping and currency conversion will cost around AU$ 600.00 per case. We do not get a discount from G&G so the price to us as the same as it would be to you. We make no profit on G&G cases.
Gator Titan Series GWP-ELECTRIC ATA Impact & Waterproof Guitar Case. The GWP-ELECTRIC case by Gator is a heavy duty flight case constructed from impact proof lightweight NK-7™ resin with Power Claw latches. The orientation of this case actually favours left handed guitars over right handed guitars as the body cavity is on the left side of the case and the headstock cavity in on the right side of the case, which is the opposite of normal right handed guitar hard cases. This case will fit the Gaskell Eagle well. The GWP-ELECTRIC retails in Australia for AU$ 455.00.
SKB 3i-4214-OP. This is the iSeries Waterproof Open Cavity Electric Guitar Case, by SKB Cases. This is a generic top-end case and can be taken on planes, trains and buses with no concerns to the safety of your instrument. It will fit left handed Superstrat style guitars equally as well as right handed guitars. It is one of the few generic hard cases that does.
GATOR GC-ELEC-XL. This hard case by Gator Cases will fit the unique Superstrat shape of the Gaskell Eagle and will protect your investment without need for concern. This Gator case retails in Australia for AU$ 299.00.
There are not many soft cases available that will fit left handed Superstrat guitars and none that we would recommend for a custom shop guitar.
There are many gig bags suited for Strat style guitars. Many will also work for left handed guitars. This depends on the degree of padding which has to be decent for both the front and back of the bag in order to be safe for left handed guitars. Prices range from very cheap to very expensive.
XTREME BAGS AUSTRALIA. This range of gig bags available here in Australia are extremely well made and very protective. If you are going from gig to gig and want the security of an easy to transport, well-padded bag to transport your guitar then these bags are ideal. The fit is ordinarily fairly loose but for the slightly bigger shape of the Gaskell Eagle compared to other Superstrats this works well. This case is a stock item.
LEFT HANDED FLYING V GUITARS
Gibson original hard cases for Flying V guitars will fit Gaskell (and other) Flying V guitars, as will Dean hard cases. For other non-branded cases the choices are slim.
SKB 1SKB-58. SKB makes an excellent, shaped hard case for Flying V guitars and will fit both right handed and left handed instruments equally well. Retailing at AU$ 249.00 it is well-worth the money. We recommend this case if a hard case is your first choice for your Gaskell Custom left handed Flying V.
As far as I know there is only one quality shaped soft case for Flying V guitars and it is suited for both right handed and left handed models.
SKB 1SKB-SC58. SKB makes an excellent soft case for Flying V guitars with EPS foam interior and nylon exterior. This case is just as strong as a hard case and in some ways better due to the softer padding and the shaped fit. This case will fit left handed and right handed Flying Vs equally well. We highly recommend this case if a soft case is your choice.
Several gig bags are available for Flying V guitars.
RITTER RGP5-V. Ritter is a company in Switzerland that makes high quality gig bags for guitars including Flying V guitars. Due the symmetrical shape of both right handed and left handed Flying V guitars, both will fit perfectly in this well-padded and stylish gig bag. Ritter had no presence in Australia until 2015. Prior to then we could only obtain the bag directly from Europe.
GB DELUXE. This is a very well-padded and well-made heavy duty nylon gig bag for both left handed and right handed Flying V guitars. Made in India, this bag is quite suitable for gigging and travel and is reasonably priced. It can be bought for US$ 49.95 + shipping through Alto Music in the USA. Shipping from USA to Australia is US$ 49.50 which makes the bag end up at around AU$ 140.00. We sell this bag for what it costs us. We make no profit on this product. UPDATE DECEMBER 2016. It appears Alto Music are now selling this bag under a different brand name: “Buhne Industries.” Both bags are exactly the same. The GB version is no longer available from Alto Music.
WORLD TOUR EFVG20D. World Tour make a tough nylon zip-up Flying V gig bag with 20mm padding. This is not a brand we get in Australia but bags can be bought easily through various online US music sites or Amazon USA. US$ 29.95 + shipping. To be honest I have never tried this brand. Shipping from USA to Australia is US $49.50 (about AU$ 70.00.) All up approximately AU$ 110.00. We sell this bag for what it costs us. We make no profit on this product. UPDATE DECEMBER 2016. Although these are still advertised on Amazon it appears World Tour may have gone out of business as they have no website any more.
LEFT HANDED RANDY RHOADS V
Apart from Jackson USA and ESP Guitars which make Randy Rhoads V guitars there are no other generic hard cases specifically made for the Randy Rhoads V shape. Both the Jackson and ESP hard cases will only fit right handed Randy Rhoads guitars.
There are no such soft cases made for left handed Randy Rhoads V guitars and right handed cases are not interchangeable.
There is only one brand in the market today that still makes a Randy Rhoads-specific gig bag. There are some other generic bags that happen to fit this style of guitar too.
RITTER RGS7-JR. Ritter makes a well-padded and stylish gig bag for Randy Rhoads V guitars. Because it is well padded on both sides of the bag it will also take left handed Randy Rhoads V guitars such as the Gaskell Concord. Australia has had a Ritter distributor since 2015.
THOMANN. This is the same gig bag made for Explorer guitars and will also fit Randy Rhoads guitars quite well, both right handed or left handed versions. These bags are well padded and excellently priced. These are available through THOMANN Europe. With shipping the bag ends up costing AU$ 110.00. It is the same price to you as it is to us. We make no profit on this product.
LEFT HANDED THUNDERBIRD BASS
Epiphone and Gibson make hard shell cases for their Thunderbird guitars but I believe they do not fit left handed basses, probably because neither Epiphone nor Gibson make left handed Thunderbirds. There are two brands I am aware of that make hard cases suitable for left handed Thunderbird bass guitars.
SPIDER BC500-MF2. This is a hard case distributed by UK company Flightcase Warehouse. They make a hard case specifically for Thunderbird basses and will also fit the Gaskell Thunderbass. However, as with most generic cases it does require some additional propping up of the neck to lift the headstock off the bottom of the case. Flightcase Warehouse do international shipping and we can option your build with this case if you choose. We sell this bag for what it costs us. We make no profit on this product. UPDATE JANUARY 2016. It appears this case is no longer listed on the Flightcase Warehouse website. It might have been discontinued or replaced?
TKL 7867 PREMIER SERIES. TKL Products Corp is a case manufacturer located in Virginia, USA which has been making musical instrument cases since 1984. Their cases are very high end and their quality and prices are high. With shipping and exchange rate difference this case comes to over U$ 500.00. It will fit both right handed and left handed Thunderbird bass guitars. 100% made in USA.
There are no soft cases made to fit Thunderbird bass guitars
Unfortunately there are only two brands on the market (that we know of) that makes a padded gig bag that will fit a Thunderbird bass guitar.
GB PREMIUM. This is the same gig bag made for Explorer Bass guitars and will fit Thunderbird Bass guitars well. The fit is actually better for the Thunderbird than the intended Explorer Bass and it is well padded. Being that there are no alternatives this gig bag fortunately does the job very well and for the price should elicit no complaints. It can be bought for US$ 57.50 – 77.95 + shipping through Amazon. Shipping from USA to Australia is US$ 49.50. All up the bag ends up being around AU$ 170.00. We sell this bag for what it costs us. We make no profit on this product.
THOMANN. The German music chain store Thomann offers a low priced cordura nylon gig bag that will fit Thunderbird bass guitars as well as Explorer bass guitars. Unfortunately this bag is not obtainable from Australian wholesalers so we have to buy it from Thomann in Europe, and at full retail price. We are very familiar with this bag and would highly recommend it for the working musician. It ends up being around AU$ 120.00 to us. We sell this bag for what it costs us. We make no profit on this product.
LEFT HANDED FLYING V BASS GUITARS
There are no hard cases on the market that will fit a left or right handed Flying V bass guitar.
There are no soft cases on the market that will fit a left or right handed Flying V bass guitar.
There is one product available for Flying V bass guitars that I am aware of. Although it is not expensive it is a well-made gig bag but with a fairly loose fit. It may be advisable to pad your guitar out before transporting it in this gig bag.
GB PREMIUM. Made in India this is the same manufacturer that makes Explorer and Explorer Bass gig bags mentioned herein. They are very well made and are sometimes sold under other brands but in every case are the same product. These ones are available through Amazon USA and other US music stores. MSRP = US$ 57.50 + shipping. We sell this bag for what it costs us. We make no profit on this product.
